Sayram Lake, Xinjiang: A High-Mountain Blue Lake in the Western Tien Shan

Sayram Lake (Sairam Lake) is the largest cold-water alpine lake in the Tien Shan range, at 2,071 meters elevation. Mongolian herders call it “Sairam Nuur,” meaning “the lake on the mountain ridge.”

The Lake

Sayram Lake is shaped like a giant sapphire — about 30 km east-west and 25 km north-south. It feeds on snowmelt from surrounding peaks, with water temperatures staying below 10°C year-round. Cold-water fish are the local specialty, the most famous being the great whitefish.

The lake’s color shifts with light and season — bright blue on a sunny midday, gray-blue on cloudy days, purple-blue before sunset at dusk. May and June bring wildflowers (golden lotus, wild lilies) blanketing the lakeside hills; July and August turn everything green; September brings the first autumn colors.

The ring road around the lake is about 90 km; you can self-drive or hire a car, with viewing platforms every few kilometers. The most classic shooting spot is on the south side of the lake, called “Kele Yongzhu” — with several wooden boardwalks extending out into the water.

At Sayram Lake

The best season is May through October. June is most beautiful (wildflowers), but the weather can be changeable; July-August has more stable conditions.

You can stay in Mongolian-run yurts by the lake; at night you can see the Milky Way rising from the lake surface.

From Urumqi it’s about a 6-hour drive; from Yining about 2.5 hours. Most people start from Yining as part of a deeper Ili Valley trip.
